We'll race, but it's all about the comraderie, the party and the fun! (author unknown)

10/02/2009 Latest HAVABlast from our event Chairman Gordon Bagley

REGISTRATION DEADLINE is OCT. 8th!

Alert! One week to registration deadline for HAVAMEGA. Thank you to all who have registered and sent their payment. There is a penalty to those who are late to send their registration with payment. Your regatta bag will be short of the perks. So, if you want a full bag, then please send on your registration with payment. Our shirt order is being prepared and it is based on paid registrations. Also, our party and banquet preparations are largely based on pre-registration with payment. Please send this on to your friends in the Hobie racing world.

WIND at LAKE HAVASU!

Those of you who watch the weather sites should begin to see the temperature gradients changing in the Havasu area. Whereas up until now the temps have been over 100 degrees, a dramatic lowering of temperatures has occurred in the desert. This is the time that the upper level low pressure begins to settle into the Colorado River Basin, and we experience a lot of breeze. North wind becomes more frequent every week until the New Year. Lake Havasu will soon be experiencing the daily ‘Winter Wind’ that has up until now been nearly unknown to the sailing world for this area. During the November dates for Havamega, Lake Havasu will likely have SW to SSW wind from 5-13mph, with odds on that one or two days will be NW to NNW wind from 13-22mph. This is based on research of the last 5 years of records for the lake wind there. Locals report the lake is filled in every day during the late fall, winter and early spring.

Havamega North Americans to benefit Hobie Youth Sailing!

Yes, the Hobie Youth Sailing Education Foundation (a 501c3 corp) is our attendant charity. Profit from this event will go to provide resources and boats for a new Hobie Youth sail training and racing instruction program at Lake Havasu Yacht Club/Fleet 88. Local families will be invited to watch our event and join a youth sailing program on the fun boats. Remember that your participation will have a lot to do with the success of this effort. We fully hope to purchase a few of the Hobie Waves that Hobiecat is bring for charter for this Youth program.

Are You Flying into Las Vegas to go to Havasu?

There are several shuttles that take people flying into Las Vegas who are going to Lake Havasu City. There are a couple of shuttle services operating between Havasu and Las Vegas; Commuter Services (928-680-7433) and Havasu/Vegas Express Co (800-459-4884) and River City, LLC (888-948-3427).

HAVAMEGA HCA North American Championship update

There is a lot that can be said about the team of planners and workaholics making preparations for this incredibly large event. We have secured 3 beachheads for the massive amount of boats coming to HAVAMEGA, with the party planning under way. Monday and Friday will have the welcome party and awards banquet at the Nautical Inn facilities, including huge banquet room, close by the Naked Turtle Outdoor Cabana Bar and Indoor Bar upstairs. Wednesday will have a beach party with large tent and pig roast. Special care will be taken for vegans as well as omnivores.

Many of you have logged on to havamega.com to see how the RSVP's are coming, and for those that have yet taken a look, we're up to 107 teams on the list. A small surprise, facilitated by a very active social group of H18 sailors on hcspace.org, has the H18 group in the lead at 24 boats. Close behind are the Tigers at 23, largely due to a very strong contingent out of Division 4 in the Pacific Northwest. Next are the H16's at 22 boats, though we know that in the end they will probably approach 50 boats. H20's are 15, H17's at 13, Waves at 4 and FX-Ones at 3. We expect to have a racing exhibition of Adventure Islands as well as we've had a number from around the west asking to be part of the racing. We're still hoping to get some Hobie 14's and Getaways on the water as well, but are yet to hear from those classes.

A significant enhancement of the event is currently being planned, as the Lake Havasu City mainland has another event coinciding with ours. This event, which we will mention later, is hoping to join ours for one of the days and provide a media spectacle that will only be helped by our boats racing on Lake Havasu as a backdrop. Stand by for further developments.

Finally, Lake Havasu City is purchasing 4 large eight foot tetrahedrons with graphics to enhance our three courses during the event. Pictures during the event taken around these marks will further enhance the spectacle of one of the biggest Hobiecat championships in many years.

Looking forward to seeing you in November, Gordo Bagley, HAVAMEGA Regatta Chairman

The Crazy Horse Campground facility at Lake Havasu is now open for reservations.  If you have the need to place reservations and secure a particular location, then now is the time.  Please be advised that Crazy Horse has a full payment in advance at the time your reservation is made.  I tried to find a way around this, but it is a long standing policy with CH and is largely because they have something of an exclusive place in the area, with a lot of demand.  I will say this, that if you do not have a special need for a particular space, there will be ample spots available if you should be making reservations nearer to the date of the HAVAMEGA event.  CH has given us a special rate of 30/35 per day, instead of the 35/40 normal price.  This was negotiated and is much appreciated.  This rate will expire on October 15th, 2009, so if you want the savings, then be sure to make reservations before that date.  Most all spaces have water and power, and others are full service RV spots.  Feel free to relay any furtheruestions to me.  I will respond as quickly as possible.

Thank you kindly for your patience,
Gordo Bagley, HAVAMEGA Regatta Chairman
